LAKE SEVAN, SEVANAVANK MONASTERY, BJNI FORTRESS
Surrounded by wooded hills and dramatic cliffs, the village Bjni is known for its natural springs (including mineral water sources), lush landscapes, and medieval heritage.
Bjni has been inhabited since ancient times and played an important role during the medieval Armenian kingdoms. Its strategic position along trade and military routes made it both a cultural and defensive center. Today, it remains a quiet rural community where traditional stone houses, orchards, and pastoral scenery blend with centuries-old ruins.
The Bjni Fortress dates primarily to the 9th–11th centuries and was an important stronghold during the rule of the Bagratuni dynasty. Built on a rocky promontory overlooking the Hrazdan River gorge, the fortress commanded a wide view of the surrounding valley, making it a powerful defensive site.
The Bjni Monastery complex, located within the village, dates mainly to the 10th and 11th centuries. The principal church is Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), built in 1031. It is a fine example of medieval Armenian ecclesiastical architecture, featuring:
